Explore Halal Market in Bosnia

Uniting Industries to drive the growth

According to the Global Muslim Travel Index for 2024, Bosnia and Herzegovina is the 6th halal tourist destination in Europe and 43rd in the world. Agencies from all over the world have tourist itineraries for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the key points of interest are natural beauty, visits to historical sites, especially those from the Ottoman period, tourist experiences such as rafting on the Neretva River, and visits to old city centers in Sarajevo, Mostar, Travnik, Jajce, Počitelj…

The status of one of the most desirable halal tourist destinations on the European continent has inevitably influenced the greater demand for halal products and the accelerated development of the halal industry. Besides strategic geographical location within the Adria region, there are other factors that make Bosnia the perfect place for international companies working in the field of halal industry, not only to market their products and increase sales, but also to think strategically about investing and opening branches of their factories in this country.

What is Halal

The term “Halal” comes from the Arabic language and means allowed, permissible. The opposite of “Halal” is “Haram,” which means the forbidden, not permitted.

In the context of food, Halal refers to products that are prepared, processed, and consumed in accordance with Islamic dietary laws. This includes the prohibition of certain foods such as pork and alcohol, as well as specific methods of slaughtering animals. However, Halal is not limited to food. It extends to cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals and even materials that come into contact with food.

As a broader concept, Halal encompasses various aspects of daily life. It is a guiding principle that defines what is allowed and what is forbidden for Muslims, shaping not only what they consume but also how they live, work, and interact with the world around them.

Our Story

Story of Halal Expo Sarajevo

For more than a decade, Sarajevo has had a tradition of organizing various types of international events that bring together representatives of the halal industry. First such event was held in 2013, under the name Sarajevo Halal Fair, bringing together representatives of the halal industry from Southeast European countries. In the following years, representatives of halal industries from all over the world showed great interest in these events.

In 2024 Rekaz Sarajevo LLC, a company specializing in marketing, signed an agreement with the Bosnian Agency for Halal Quality Certification affiliated with Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Riyasat). As a result, Rekaz will organize the Halal Expo Sarajevo 2025, a mayor event aimed at raising awareness among Muslims in Bosnia and the Adria region countries about the halal culture and standards.

Why Bosnia?

There is no country in the world like Bosnia, it is truly unique in its character. Historically and geographically Bosnia is a part of Europe, and it also boasts exceptional cultural and religious diversity.  Although Muslims (Bosniaks) constitute the majority of the population, Bosnia also has a significant population of Orthodox and Catholic Christians, as well as a small Jewish community.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is qualified to be a natural center and reference point for European Muslims, because Bosnian Muslims (Bosniaks) are an integral part of the European social fabric—not immigrants or newcomers. Furthermore, Bosnia is strategically positioned as a natural gateway for the Muslim world into Europe and a bridge connecting Europe to the Muslim World.

Given this, Bosnia is an ideal location for hosting international events that bring together businesses and stakeholders from the East and the West. Halal Expo Sarajevo represents a step forward in this direction, inviting collaboration to build strategic partnerships, promote halal culture among Muslims in Bosnia and the entire Adria Region and improve the Halal industry throughout Europe.
